FREITAG Ditches Its Rough-and-Tumble Look for a Sleeker New Line Called REFERENCE

A stylish man in a denim jacket showcases urban fashion by holding a patterned messenger bag alongside a sleek solid version.

Swiss bag maker FREITAG has a new collection called REFERENCE, and it looks nothing like the brand’s usual rugged style. The news was first reported by nss magazine, which says the line moves away from FREITAG’s long-time utilitarian look toward something more polished and minimal. No pricing was given in the report.

FREITAG has been turning old truck tarps into bags since 1993. That idea, taking a worn-out, waterproof tarp off a semi-truck and turning it into a one-of-a-kind bag, is why the brand built a cult following in the first place. REFERENCE keeps that upcycling idea alive but dresses it up for a more refined crowd.

How to spot it

The tarps used for REFERENCE are hand-picked from roads across Europe, same as always. But instead of FREITAG’s usual mix of bold colors and patchwork patterns, this line sticks to a quieter, almost monochrome look. The scratches, creases, and worn spots from years on the road are still there. They are just presented in a cleaner, more grown-up way.

The collection was designed by Anne Bachmann, who has worked as FREITAG’s product designer for sixteen years. Here is what the line includes, according to nss magazine:

Weathered truck tarp material before upcycling

  • ELLY: a minimal crossbody bag (a bag worn with the strap across your chest, good for keeping your hands free)
  • BATES: built to work for both daytime errands and evening plans
  • MAZIE: an extra-large tote that converts to a different shape or carry style
  • NAN: a single-strap bag with a modern, simplified silhouette

All four share a few design details. They use trapezoidal shapes, recycled polyester linings, and a magnetic clasp stamped with the FREITAG logo. That clasp design was inspired by a metal part the team found in their own factory.

Every bag in the collection ships with a repair kit made from the same tarp material. The idea is simple: when a corner wears through or a strap frays, you patch it instead of tossing the bag. That fits with FREITAG’s long-standing pitch that a bag should last, not get replaced every few years.

Colors for the launch are white, silver, red and blue, with a limited black version rounding out the lineup.

What it means for readers

If you have followed FREITAG for its patchwork-tarp look, REFERENCE is a shift. It trades the brand’s busier, more industrial style for something closer to what you would carry to an office or a dinner, not just a bike commute. That makes it worth a look if you want a bag with a visible backstory (literally, made from a real truck tarp) but want it to read as sleek rather than scrappy.

This is also a reminder of something Good Earth Montana talks about a lot in its gear guide: good carry gear should earn its keep over years, not seasons. Whether it is full-grain leather, waxed canvas, hemp, or in this case, reclaimed truck tarp, the materials that last are the ones worth paying attention to before you buy. A built-in repair kit, as the one FREITAG includes here, is exactly the kind of detail that signals a brand thinking past the first year of use.

Readers who like one-of-a-kind materials, since every tarp has its own wear pattern, may find this collection appealing precisely because no two bags will look identical. That is a real tradeoff to know going in: you are not picking a product photo; you are picking a material story.

What to do if it happened to you

No pricing or release date was included in the nss magazine report, so there is nothing to buy yet based on what’s public. If you’re interested, the practical move right now is to watch FREITAG’s own channels for pricing, sizing, and availability before REFERENCE goes on sale.

In the meantime, if you already own one of FREITAG’s classic tarp bags, check it for any wear spots. A simple patch job now can save you from needing a full replacement later, which is the whole idea behind durable, repairable carry gear in the first place.
